Consumerism During the Holidays

 Are you ready for the "most wonderful time of the year?" 

From the end of October to New Years, it is a time that should be stress free and focused on spending time with family, friends, and loved ones. Especially in 2020, the year of COVID-19, it is especially important to tell loved ones how much they are appreciated, and really cherish those who are here today. 

Unfortunately, this is almost never how the holidays go. The holidays are filled with stress whether it's from the extreme financial burden the holidays put on consumers, or it is the idea of finding the perfect gift for that special someone. There is a fear in the back of everyone's mind about if the person will like the gift or not, or if it was thoughtful enough or not. But that is not what the holidays are supposed to be about! It doesn't matter how much money was spent on a gift, or if the person bought it on sale or for such a great deal! It is about the fact that a person took time out of their day to get something for someone that they thought they would like.

Society is too caught up in having the latest iPhone, or the best name-brand clothes, or the coolest car, that its almost completely forgotten what the holidays are really about - Family. We see advertisements from the second Halloween is over about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which ironically happen after Thanksgiving, the holiday where families express their gratitude for what they have.

In this flyer project, the intent is to show what the holidays are really about with images of families enjoying each others company, not the items they surround themselves with. The primary colors used will be red, green, and yellow or blue, depending on which thumbnail is chosen for the final.

  1. Thumbnail 5 works because its message is clear and it is not overcrowded with graphics. It also has a humourous underbite that makes the flyer innocent and suggestive, as opposed to declarative and judging.
